Just because you don’t have spacious living quarters doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t be able to have a nice dining area. No matter the size of your home or apartment (and regardless of whether you can fit a full dining room set or not), you can fit a dining table into a small space.
While it might require some interior design creativity or some out-of-the-box thinking, there are several ways you can create a dining area in your home or apartment that you can be proud of.
Use a round table instead of a square one
There’s more than one advantage to choosing a round table when space is limited. For one, since round tables don’t have corners, they can fit into corners of your dining space better than square tables. They also have the added benefit of seating more people and being more versatile.
Try wall-mounted benches in lieu of chairs
If you don’t have much space in your dining area, putting a table in the corner of a room may not be feasible, as people might be cramped against the wall with their chairs. This is because, in addition to needing space to fit into their seat, they also need enough room to be able to push back from the table and get up.
With the use of wall-mounted benches, you can implement custom upholstery of your choosing and eliminate the need for chairs entirely, as you can push the table almost right up to the wall. This works great if you use an L-shaped bench in a corner.
Create a kitchen island
If you’ve eschewed a full dining room set and simply need to fit a dining table and some chairs into a space, consider the middle of your kitchen. It might seem odd at first, but this is some of the out-of-the-box thinking we discussed earlier.
In addition to being a great place to eat, a dining table in the middle of your kitchen can serve as an extra surface to use when cooking, which can come in handy when you’re performing multiple steps of a complicated recipe at once.
Consider a long, narrow dining table
If you’re really cramped when it comes to dining space, you can try a long and narrow table pushed against a wall. This is a viable solution because it offers seating for up to four people while providing you with the versatility to place the table in your kitchen or even in a walkway if you like, because it doesn’t block or clutter up the space.
Craft a dining booth
If, when you go out to eat, you prefer a booth to a table, have you ever thought about having one in your home? This solution works like the wall-mounted benches mentioned above—except the booth would likely be in your kitchen at the end of your countertop, and you wouldn’t need chairs at all. This would allow you to fit a small dining table in between the booths rather comfortably and give your dining space a unique and comfortable feel.
